Lowell is a small town nearby at an elevation of about 5,075 feet. It has a colorful center almost frozen in time. It was once a mining town that attracted immigrants from all over the world. Lowell is worth checking out if you enjoy quiet home living in an area with a timeless history that is evident everywhere you look.

Bisbee is the county seat of Cochise County. It has a population of about 5,500. This is another former mining town with a main draw straight out of a western movie. The residential schools at Fort Huachuca are the primary educational institutions on post. There are two elementary schools and a middle school, serving children in grades K-8. Sierra Vista Public Schools serving children in grades K-12 are also available. Preschool is available by mail, and there are many daycare options in the surrounding community.

Summers here are hot and dry, and temperatures can climb into the 90s and even the low 100s on rare occasions. You won't see much rain during the year, but it will be cloudy most of the time. The wettest part of the year comes at the end of July. Winter temperatures can drop below 40 degrees, although this is unlikely. For the most part, the humidity is low and it's quite comfortable during Lent, although you'll probably want to stay in the shade during the hot summer months.

The area around the post is great for outdoor enthusiasts. Canyons, trails and other places for hiking, camping and tours are within an easy drive of the fort. On the cultural side, museums can be found, including the Military Intelligence Museum, the Cove Aquatic Center, the Arizona Folklore Preserve, and more.
