Nichols is the Deputy Commandant of the US Army Defense Academy (USATSCH) and is responsible for overseeing and directing the execution of the Commandant's decisions and policies across all major functions. As director of instruction, Nichols is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the school, which serves more than 8,000 students each year.

Prior to assuming his current role in February 2020, Nichols served as a training systems specialist, logistics management specialist, management analyst, and research and program evaluation analyst. Assignments include Director, CASCOM G3/5/7 Training and Doctrine Integration Directorate and CASCOM Director of Lessons Learned and Quality Assurance. From 1999-2008, Nichols worked in force development and capability development and served as CASCOM's deputy director of Force Development.
